The Forte di Marina di Bibbona: A Coastal Sentinel of the Grand Duchy
The Forte di Marina di Bibbona stands as a testament to the strategic vision of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany during the 18th century. Built in the second half of the 1700s under the rule of the House of Lorraine, its construction was closely tied to the nearby Forte di Castagneto. Both structures were part of a wider plan to strengthen the region’s coastal defenses and improve sanitary and military oversight.
Completed around 1789–1790, alongside the similar Forte dei Marmi in Versilia, the Bibbona fort served multiple functions: it protected the coastline from enemy raids, enforced health regulations to prevent the spread of disease, curbed smuggling operations, and acted as a logistical hub for maritime trade.
For many years, and until shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, the fort was repurposed as a holiday residence, occasionally rented out for seasonal stays. Today, however, the Forte di Marina di Bibbona finds itself in a state of semi-abandonment. Though still structurally impressive, it is now only sporadically used for small-scale events or community gatherings organized by local groups.
Despite its current condition, the fort remains a significant historical landmark—a silent guardian of Tuscany’s coastal heritage and a potential site for future restoration and cultural revitalization.
