Venice, between Light and Silence: the enchanting spectacle of water flowing through the canals

Over the past few months, I’ve lived a beautiful and intense painting experience, as I prepared for my upcoming exhibition at the end of August. The show will focus on the Venetian lagoon and the hidden corners of a city that feels ethereal, suspended in time.

The inspiration for this work stems from a deep reverence I have always felt for Venice. I don’t see it simply as a city, but as a living being, a widespread work of art, an open-air museum where every detail – from the reflections of water on ancient marble to the briny scents mingled with the aroma of wet wood – tells a story. Every time I visit, I feel an intimate, profound connection that goes far beyond the picturesque postcard image. Walking through silent alleys, shaded underpasses, and narrow, lesser-known canals away from the tourist crowds is like slipping into another layer of reality, where everything becomes slower, quieter, more authentic.

With my painting, I’ve tried to capture exactly that: the Venice that doesn’t show itself to everyone, but reveals its soul to those who know how to truly look – with attentive eyes and an open heart. Each brushstroke has been a journey into that suspended world, and I can’t wait to share it with those who are ready to see its poetry.

The Gondola and the Flow of Water: A Liquid Poetry

In the heart of the Venetian dream, the gondola glides – slow, silent, eternal. It is not merely a boat, but a shadow that dances upon the water, a black flame that curves like a sigh across the silver skin of the lagoon. In this exhibition, the gondola becomes a symbol: of passage, of pause, of listening. It is the silent witness to centuries, to whispers carried by the breeze and secrets dissolved in the tide.

I have sought to paint not the object, but its presence. The way it bends time. The way it cuts the water without disturbing it. The reflections it gathers and transforms, the echoes it leaves in its wake. But most of all, I have painted the water itself: fluid, impalpable, ever-changing. Its rhythm, its shimmer, the way it speaks in ripples and light.

Water is a mirror and a memory, and in Venice, it becomes language. My canvases aim to translate this language into form and color. The gondola is the pen; the water, the page.

A Dialogue of Techniques: Realism, Abstraction, Emotion

The story of Venice cannot be told in a single style, nor with a single voice. That is why this body of work explores different techniques, allowing the theme to breathe through multiple lenses. The oil paintings embrace a more realistic approach, capturing the textures of stone, the deep velvet of shadows, the slow elegance of twilight on the façades. Here, every detail is rendered with care, as if to honor the timeworn beauty of the city with reverence and precision.

In contrast, other works emerge from a freer gesture – on paperboard, in acrylic and oil – where color becomes the protagonist. These pieces do not aim to reproduce, but to evoke. In them, the lagoon pulses through vivid contrasts, chromatic harmonies, and bold brushstrokes. The line between figuration and abstraction becomes thin, as if the city itself were dissolving into pure sensation.

This duality reflects my journey as an artist: the desire to both describe and dream. To let technique serve the emotion, to allow discipline and intuition to coexist on the same canvas. Venice, after all, is not only seen – it is felt. And so must be painted.

You Are Warmly Invited

I am delighted to invite you to the vernissage of my exhibition, which will take place on August 29th at Villa Davoli in Reggio Emilia – a setting that seems designed to let one step out of time. Nestled in quiet elegance, far from the noise of the city, VillaDavoli offers the perfect atmosphere to immerse yourself fully in the evocative world of Venetian reflections and lagoon-inspired reveries.

During the evening, art will be only one of the pleasures to indulge in. Guests will be able to savor a fine selection of organic wines, crafted with passion and precision by @enologone, a winemaker devoted to purity and sustainability. And for those who love culinary excellence, there will be the opportunity to enjoy a taste of authentic Chianina beef, directly from the pastures of Monteduro, rich in flavor and tradition.

It will be an evening of art, wine, and warm encounters – a celebration of beauty in all its forms.

I look forward to sharing it with you.

My heartfelt thanks go to Villa Davoli for its refined hospitality and splendid welcome, to Enologone for its valuable collaboration and its wines that tell the story of the land with authenticity, and to Chianina di Monteduro who made the experience even more complete with the genuine flavours of its excellent meat.

See you soon, with joy.
