Aronzo di Cadore e l’abbandono delle case

A walk in Aronzo di Cadore:

Walking around Aronzo (Belluno), I noticed several abandoned buildings, most of them mammoth in size, they are very squat and massive. The impression is always the same, that is, to be faced with buildings with a strong physical presence, almost disproportionate in size, considering the place where they are located. Aronzo, like so many villages in the Cdore, is in fact a small town and in part probably suffers from severe neglect. Testimony to this are the numerous abandoned buildings I found during my excursion at the end of December ‘23. Often these houses, with a varying number of storeys (usually between two and four) are leaning against the mountain ridge and follow the slope of the terrain by conformation. At first glance they might seem almost squat and sometimes too wide in relation to their height, but then looking at them from the side, one notices that the houses descend one level from the street level. It is the part that is normally defined as basement that goes downwards and in these cases, however, the storey or storeys, as the case may be, are not totally hidden and covered with soil, but enjoy openings on the sides behind the street.

The harmony with which the Cadore houses are built between the road and the slope of the mountain ridge seems almost like a game of steps. As if they always conceal a hidden, recessed and more intimate part. These houses take shape and acquire slenderness only at a closer look, almost as if to give harmony to those who really want to appreciate them.
